Komodo wins the TCEC Superfinal!

komodo-chess-engine-1Komodo chess engine is the winner of this year’s world strongest computer chess championship TCEC. Komodo edged Stockfish in the final match 25,0 : 23,0 in a dramatic battle.
Komodo was off to an exciting start, but Stockfish quickly caught up. The balance of powers maintained until game 25, when Komodo got three consecutive wins. Until game 34 it maintained a four points lead, but them Stockfish started waking up. With two heavy blows in games 40 and 41, the distance was reduced to just two points, seven rounds before the end.
Stockfish managed to squeeze one more point in game 43, reducing the distance to just one point with five games to go. In some tense battles, four draws followed, leaving the resolution for the last 48th game. In case of a win for Stockfish, a tiebreak would have been played, any other result favored Komodo. In a rook and pawns ending, Komodo played a brilliant game to win the full point and close the championship in style.
With a final score 25,0 : 23,0 Komodo is TCEC Champion. Congratulations Komodo!

Stockfish 4 Chess All Games

Stockfish leads TCEC Stage 4

stockfish-4Stage 4 of the world’s strongest computer chess championship TCEC is entering in it’s final battles. The winner of Stage 4 and the second placed will proceed to the Superfinal to determine the strongest computer engine of 2013.
Ater 21 rounds played, Stockfish 4 is leading with 14,0/21 – 7 wins, 14 draws, and 0 losses. The amazing performance of Stockfish is contested at this time only by the Stage 2 and Stage 3 winner Komodo with 13,5/21 – 6 wins, 14 draws, and 0 losses.
Third place is for last season’s top engine Houdini with 11,5/21. Houdini is playing successfully vs all other engines, except Komodo, where the score is +0 = 2 -2.
Bouquet with 10,0/21, Naum with 7,0/21, and Gull with 7,0/21 have very little chances for the top two positions. Therefore, the race in the final games of Stage 4 of TCEC will be between Stockfish, Komodo, and Houdini.

Stockfish 4 Chess Review

If you're looking for a strong, free engine and already have a GUI for it, Stockfish 4 is available. Stockfish 3 was a very strong #3 on this rating list (the other two are certainly worthy but not free), so one would expect its successor to be at least as strong. My quick impression is that its evaluations may be a little bloated early in the game, so don't be in a rush to accept its evaluations of your favorite opening as gospel truth. Clearly it does a great job of finding moves though, so again, if you're looking for a very strong and free engine and have a GUI for it, you may wish to give it a try.
